Welsh Terrier Club of Northern Illinois Specialty Show

SWEEPSTAKES

Sweepstakes Judge: Sharon Ann Redmer

Judge’s Comments:

Sincere Thank you to the show committee and leadership of the Welsh Terrier Club of Northern Illinois for this opportunity to judge your Puppy & Veteran Sweepstakes in Louisville.

I was delighted to accept the assignment even though I was reasonably certain that I would be approved as an AKC Permit judge by the time the show actually rolled around. And that is exactly what happened! This was a unique opportunity to actually judge a group of Welsh Terriers on the same weekend as your Floating Specialty! Prepping for my application had taken place months (years) before. I was blessed with excellent mentors for both ringside teaching and kennel visits, evaluated at least 3 litters of well-bred Welsh puppies, judged Welsh Terriers in NOHS Terrier Group competition many times, and attended the Great Montgomery Kennel Club show in 2023. But make no mistake there is simply NO substitute for actually judging the dogs against each other in a ring situation.

I found my assignment to be most pleasant. The puppies were very nice representatives of the breed. Kudos to the breeders. Temperaments were mostly self-assured and a bit naughty. One puppy who was a bit overwhelmed in the Sweeps blossomed by the time of the regular point show competition and I was truly happy to see this! My Puppy Best in Sweeps & Best of Opposite in Sweeps were both proportional and square, had proper puppy coats, pleasant heads, dark eyes and tails carried correctly. The male got the final nod with a gait more to the standard while the girl decided she needed only 2 hind legs to motor around the ring and gave her handler a challenge to keep “four on the floor”. They were somewhat different in style, but clearly correct Welsh Terriers.

Veteran Sweeps…gosh that one was hard. Full disclosure - I am a sucker for the oldies. Both entries had strong Welsh Terrier qualities, but the final winner (from the 11 and over Vet Dog Class) was so happy to be in the ring, he was just not to be denied.

Thank you to each of the exhibitors who brought their charming puppies and veterans to strut their stuff. I enjoyed the dogs AND the people. I saw lots of good sportsmanship in my ring with lots of support from ringside. What a nice experience, topped off by my lovely glass bowl Judge’s present with a silhouette of my breed of over 50 years – the Belgian Tervuren and my kennel name StarBright etched on it. That was a home run! Thank you.
